  Class 9 History Chapter 5: State and Society up to 1000 CE – Questions and Answers The Big Questions : 1. How did society and state organise themselves prior to 1000 CE? Answer: Kin-based society: Early Vedic society was organised into kula (family), grāma (village), viśha, and jana (clan) . The rājā was the protector of the people. Political institutions: Important assemblies such as Sabhā, Samiti, and Vidhatā assisted the king in decision-making and governance. Growth of states: Over time, small clans developed into janapadas , mahājanapadas , kingdoms, republics, and later large empires such as the Mauryas, Guptas, and Cholas .
